Electrolysis Frequently Asked Questions

Following are many of the questions we get asked about electrolysis and its procedures.

What is Electrolysis?

Electrolysis is the first and only recognized method of permanent hair removal.

How does it Work?

In electrolysis, a fine wire filament is gently inserted into the hair follicle, where electrical energy is passed down the filament destroying the hair's root.  The goal of electrolysis is to destroy the hair root to prevent further regrowth.

Waxing and tweezing affect the root directly, causing stimulation that in turn will result in more coarse hair growth and distorted hair follicles.

There are three stages of hair growth; Anagen, Catagen and Telogen. A complete hair growth cycle takes approximately 8-13 weeks to grow to the surface and become visible. Therefore the hairs you tweezed or waxed are not the same hairs that are visible now.

With regular scheduling, all hairs will have been treated at least once within approximately 3-6 months.

Is electrolysis permanent?

Yes, but it is not a quick fix like other methods.  Depending on what the individual has previously done to enhance the hair growth, a series of treatments are required to bring the hair back to its langua (fine) stage.

What can you Expect?

There is a slight sensation, a feeling of warmth.  Each individual's pain tolerance level varies.  It is a minor discomfort to some while others are able to sleep during treatment.

Is it Safe?

Absolutely. The modern computerized equipment is automatically controlled so there is no possibility of over-exposing the skin. As well, sterilized disposable filaments are used each and every time for your protection.

What Areas can be Treated?

The method is so smooth and gentle that hair can be permanently removed from any area.  Electrolysis treatments are even available for men, with common problem areas being the outer ear and nose, the centre of the eyebrows, the cheeks, back and beard.

How long does it take?

It depends on the individual and the temporary methods that have been used to make the hair distorted and stronger at the base of the follicle. We will work with you to make a schedule of treatments that works best for you.  We do not recomment tweezing or waxing between electrolysis appointments as it only prolongs the technician from retarding the hair growth if the client is taking the matter into their own hands.  Trimming is acceptable between treatments as it only removes hair at the skin's surface and does not cause any damage to the hair's actual root.

What are the After Effects?

The most wonderful after effect is the permanency.

On the face and lip, you notice a slight redness that will disappear in a short time. On the arms and legs tiny, unobjectionable echars may form but they will drop off leaving skin smooth and hair free.
